Ash: also Gray
Ash being gray in colour is symbolic to sorrow and mourning.
"Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her robe of many colours that was on her and laid her hand on her head and went away crying bitterly." (2 Samuel 13:19)
"And in every province where the king's command and decree arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes." (Esther 4:3)
According to Jeremiah 6:26, Ash is symbolic of destruction.
"O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us."
