The Hebrew word 'towla' (masculine) and 'towle' (feminine) means scarlet or crimson.
In the New Testament, the Greek word 'kokkinos' means scarlet.
Crimson or scarlet is one of the colours associated with the fine materials used in the construction of the tabernacle and temple.
Each colour in the tabernacle had a meaning of its own and both scarlet and crimson means sin.
Scarlet was the colour of the cord that Rahab was told to display from her window if she and her family would be rescued from Jericho. (Josh 2:17-21)
In the song of Solomon, scarlet is used in the description of the beauty of the bride. "Your lips are like a strand of scarlet." (Song 4:1-5)
The colour scarlet is also associated with sanctification - the blood of the lamb. (See Lev 14:4, Heb 9:19-20, Num 19:6-9)
The virtuous woman provided a clothing of scarlet for her family. "She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet." (Prov 31:21)

Red can be associated with trouble and punishment, 'chamar' means red, to be troubled, be in turmoil, ferment. "For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red; It is fully mixed, and He pours it out; surely its dregs shall all the wicked of the earth drain and drink down." (Psalm 75:8)
Red is also associated with judgement and warfare: "The shields of his mighty men are made red, the valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots come with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the spears are brandished." (Nahum 2:3)

Red wine is symbolic in scripture of doctrine and wisdom: "She (wisdom) has slaughtered her meat, she has mixed her wine, she has also furnished her table.. "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed." (Prov 9:2, 5, Ecc 9:7, Isa 55, Mark 2:22)
Adulterated wine represents false teaching and doctrine. (Isa 1:22, 28:7, 29:9-11)
The cup of red wine is symbolic of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. "In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. (1Cor 11:25)
